New Moon in Aquarius: The Woman at the Well

Aquarius is an air sign that is very invested in the collective. Air signs typically are intellectual and social. Aquarius is a fixed sign, bringing in stable and focused energy. Aquarius is known as the water bearer. Water is life, and many women around the world still have to travel long distances to a well to collect water and bring it back to their family.

A Biblical archetype for Aquarius is the Woman at the Well (John 4:1-30, 39-42). Jesus’ conversation with her transgressed societal norms, offering a revolutionary message of "living water.” Commentators in the past have, of course, written her off as morally questionable. They have also attempted to delegitimize her ability to engage in a serious theological conversation with Jesus. A faithful reading of the text doesn't support either of those ideas.

Her curiosity and authenticity reflect Aquarius’ intellectual and progressive traits, while her transformation into an evangelist embodies the sign’s ability to inspire collective healing. Gail R. O'Day states that, "The text presents the woman as a character who is unafraid to stay in conversation with Jesus, who recognizes that a prophet is the perfect person of whom to ask her question. The woman is the first character in the Gospel to engage in sustained theological conversation with Jesus. The Samaritan woman is a witness and disciple like John the Baptist, Andrew, and Philip." (The Women's Bible Commentary, p 522)

Her initial isolation in showing up at the well without other women as well as her initial resistance and questioning of Jesus parallels Aquarian tendencies toward detachment and stubbornness. Ultimately, the story mirrors Aquarius’ potential to foster radical belonging and create pathways for spiritual renewal for the collective.

In terms of personality traits, each sign exhibits positives and negatives. It’s important to be aware of both, and to notice what you want to emphasize and what energy you can focus on in this season.

High Side of Aquarius: Visionary thinking, progressive and inclusive, humanitarian spirit, intellectual and curious, authenticity

Low Side of Aquarius: Detached and aloof, overly idealistic, rebellious for the sake of it, stubbornness, unpredictable
