Patient Nurture Guided Meditation

I have a crystal clear memory from my first postpartum. We were just home from the hospital, my milk was coming in, and I was in a lot of pain. I felt so anxious and was so tightly wound emotionally and physically. I decided to listen to a meditation to try and calm down. I don’t even remember what it was, but as I sat in that dark room and let the words wash over me, I experienced a deep sense of relaxation. I’ll spare you the TMI details, but my body responded in a physical way. It was honestly incredible to experience the physical response to relaxing and settling my mind. In an instant my entire body relaxed.

It’s no secret that my entry into motherhood was rocky. I learned about the concept of Orientation, Disorientation, and Reorientation from a friend of mine, Bonnie Lewis. I’ll link the podcast below if you’d like to give it a listen. I was already 2 years into motherhood when I heard this podcast, and I also clearly remember that moment, I was driving between San Diego and Orange County alone in the car and listening with tears running down my face. I still felt like a complete stranger to myself in so many ways, even two years postpartum. Hearing Bonnie say that things can’t and won’t go back to the way they were was really painful but also liberating because in that moment I started to let go of what was and create room for the joy of what is.
